Steve has been an active environmentalist working in, field work, public speaking and lobbying all levels of government. Now in demand as a speaker on Wildlife Art, photography and his reference gathering adventures. A regular speaker at schools, art groups and community gatherings
His comments on environmental issues were frequently seen in newspapers and newsletters. the love of wildlife and the need for illustrations for news letters lead to an artistic future. After a management career in the ceramic industry for 20 years Steve set his sights on an artistic future. 25 years had elapsed since he last attended High School Art classes and the first step was VCE. The first year of his artistic career resulted in, distinctions in VCE Studio Art, a proposal from a leading publisher for an illustrated book and the sale of his first Wildlife paintings. This rapid rise continued with his sketches appearing in books, graphic displays, numerous environmental news letters and 1999 R.S.P.C.A. calendar and an 8 page feature in ‘The Artist's Palette Magazine’ has show cased his work. His originals and prints appear in local and international collections.
Steve worked in Watercolour. until he found himself drawn to the work of Krystii Melaine who graciously agreed to guide his move to oils. The Tawny Frogmouth on this page was his second oil painting and confirmation of his decision to move to oil.
His work has attracted awards which include the prestigious Wildlife Art Society of Australasia annual exhibition & Best Flora or Fauna and Highly commended - Moomba Art Show. His work is now part of Australian and international collections. His passion for Wildlife shows in his works which are in demand from galleries and private commissions. An ever-present desire for improvement has been perused through classes with:

My work evolves over an in determinant period of time. I'm a realist wildlife artist and on the surface the images may appear to be a slavish copy of a photograph. They are in fact a collage of a combination images, of my experiences with and observations of the creatures and the environment. I try to portray some of the essence of the creature and some sense of what draws me to them. To give others the opportunity to experience what ever it is that make me smile, laugh, gasp look in awe,.... They evolve over time and that time is the gaps between all the other things that fill up my life. Some people don't fully understand or appreciate the work or are moved by them. I’ve also come across people, who have walked through a forest or a magnificent gorge and not hear the birds, frogs or the wind, not seen the tiny lizards or flowers they just march through and move on to the next stop on a tour. On the other hand many others have stopped, smiled and even gasped not only at the work but have seen or wish they had seen and experienced what the work portrayed. The journey and heightened experience that is a result of really looking, seeking and being inspired is time well spent. The work may be the physical output but I’d do it with out the product at the end!

FRAUD ALERT - SCAMMERS USING MY NAME
Received these emails recently:
"My name is **** ***** and I am from Canada .Several weeks ago I was emailed by a gentleman (I use that term loosely), who introduced himself as Stephen Powell. He told me he was an accomplished oil painter. To make a long story short, he said he was overseas and asked me if I would cash a money order from a purchaser of a painting. Yes, like a fool, the orders came back as forgeries and the rest is history. I have contacted this particular site and let them know that this criminal is definitely not you, and have asked them to provide me with an URL address to give to the authorities."
" I just felt it was only fair play to make you aware of this. I just thought you'd like to know that some guy is using your name on dating web sites to try to defraud women into cashing fraudulent postal money orders for him. Thought you might want to check that out.....I have no means of finding him, but he had an ad on cupid.com....."
Both cases involved forged money orders. I thank the people who have notified me of the scams. Unfortunately having a web page with a contact email address makes me a target for spam and identity theft. Please forward any emails or information to myself and the authorities. I will gladly support any prosecutions that result.
I only accept payments through international money transfer or through PayPal.
No checks, money orders or credit cards.
PayPal will prosecute the seller if any form of fraud takes place. This give some protection against fraud for the customers. I use international money transfer as payments made using this system are not reversible. Fraudulent payments using stolen credit cards are common on the web so I don't accept them.
