Students Work

Over the years my students have produced many wonderful works. I decided to showcase some examples on my site. The images are works that have emerged during my weekly classes or at workshops. I will add the work of more artists as they become available.
I thank the artists for allowing me to display them.
Please note: My classes are for beginners to advanced. Beginners should not be discouraged from starting classes by their inexperience. All the artist below and my self were beginners once. Students often make their first tentative marks in my classes.
New students are often daunted by the quality of students work and reluctant to show their previous efforts. The responses of these same students to their first works in my workshops and classes have included: 'startled', 'thrilled', 'disbelief' , 'amazed' and 'would not have thought it was possible'

All students made significant progress during the workshop & were justifiably proud of their works. Some students works have not been displayed due to copyright restrictions. Winter School 2008
The winter school was great success. Once again students from beginner to advanced using watercolour and oil achieved results that surpassed their expectations. Students arrive with a range of experience. My workshops involve whole of class presentations and demonstrations but the majority of my time is spent working individually with students. Working on techniques and skills but also raising expectations and self belief.

It's a great pleasure to guide each student through the early stages of self doubt and to see the excitement as the quality of the panting begins to emerge.

My Trip To Mitchell School of Art "Last week I had the extreme pleasure of attending Mitchell School of Art in Bathurst NSW Australia. Spent my week studying the techniques of Stephen Powell, an Australian extraordinar Wildlife artist. I am normally a watercolourist and so this transition to using oils was a little different but I got into it in a big way.
His method is very meticulous and the results are amazing. On top of all that he is a really nice person and seems to enjoy passing his knowledge to those who wish to take it in. We had only 4 in the class and this was not economic for the School but great for the 4 of us who had the privilege of painting with him...........""Just a quick note to say that I entered my wedge tail eagle painting in the Sofala Show this weekend and won 1st prize as well as winning a 1st for a landscape. Had success in the photographic section as well and won quite a few categories here too.
I reworked the eagle and he looked magnificent enough to win a prize, thanks, I owe a lot of that to you."

"I have just completed another Mitchell School of art in Bathurst. Once again I choose Wildlife art with tutor Stephen Powell and once again, I have come away enthusiastic. "

"I found just what I was looking for in painting birds and animals in oils. You taught me a new technique and I am very grateful. My son is very impressed with the technique as well. Any one who truly wishes to do better work would do well to enroll in one of your classes."

Joan Lewis - Mitchell School Bathurst Jan 06

This is not a students work. It's one of my early paintings. Produced just months into the world of the artist, age 40. I've come a long way from this pretty humble beginning. It was one of a number of exercises produced to test layout and technique. It's included to encourage you to take those first scary steps ever artist takes. We were all beginners once! My early progress would have been faster and less frustrating with an experienced guide to help.
